Hilary has been an artist for 15 years (really all her life) and has been working in the printmaking medium for about 7. She is a native of Flagstaff, Arizona who has lived in Washington, Hawaii and California, recently transplanted to San Francisco and loves it! She enjoys employing visual puns, ironic humor, celestial objects and animals in her work. She also likes the Victorian era and Japanese things (good times and places for printmaking). She uses a variety of print mediums, but her favorite is intaglio, which consists of etching, aquatint, drypoint and engraving. This process is archaic, finicky, and indirect, requiring a particular type of meticulous personality to enjoy it. Hilary finds printmaking magical because it cultivates the ability to work with the variable unknown and embrace it (and it teaches you to reverse everything in your head).

Hilary's other interests include playing ukulele, piano, banjo and singing, knitting, yoga, the metaphysical, watching birds quarrel in the garden, watching cat videos on the internet, the taste and smell of honey, helping to bring attention to women's work of all kinds, making tea for people, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett, dancing, watching flowers grow and eating gross bachelorette meals (to name a few).

At the moment, she is working at Little Paper Planes, an artists' website; making letterpress plates, sewing books together, chopping up paper, screen-printing and doing other printer-y things at Logos Graphics and working on illustrating "A Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Force of Nature" by Laurah Hagan (& still hoping to land an internship at a print studio like Crown Point Press).

Hilary will be part of the June 2010 group show at Kokoro Studio, 682 Geary St. San Francisco, CA!  www.kokorostudio.us
